St. Louis, officials may ask their residents to approve a sewer insurance program to help pay for repairing broken sewer lines. At a summer work session, the topic of placing a sewer insurance program on the April 2015 city ballot. The program would help homeowners pay for repairs, of up to $7,500 per household, covering lateral lines connecting their homes to a main sewer line.
The city of St. Louis sewer improvement program is financed with a $28 annual fee added to resident real estate taxes. St. Louis city property owners now pay a $12 fee for the water insurance program. St. Louis averages 12 to 14 claims per year involving sewer laterals, with an average repair cost of about $3,500. These are the figures city officials are coming up with.
