In the aftermath of recent flooding, the city of St. Louis has labored to protect vital infrastructure from the damages that the flooding has created. This includes wastewater treatment plants, highway bridges, embankments and more. St. Louis has collected necessary information on water flow data and level to be entered into the National Water Information System. This essential tool is specifically for monitoring heavy storms that can potentially cause damages, as well as to forecast floods and droughts in real time. Some communities in Missouri continue to battle rising floodwaters, while others are beginning their recovery efforts. As water levels begin to recede on some smaller rivers, residents are encouraged to use caution near flood water as contaminants can pose a health risk. It is estimated that nearly 200 homes have been impacted by the floods, with many more at risk of exposure to the flood-like conditions.

Interesting fact: did you know that residential waste stabilization lagoons are commonly used for onsite sewage treatment? The lagoons are used when the soils are unsuitable for the traditional gravity flow drain field systems.  A lagoon consists of an artificial pool for the treatment of sewage, or to accommodate surface water that overflows the storm drains during heavy rain. Interestingly, a septic tank is the most common onsite sewage treatment system for cities throughout Missouri. However, a connection to the city’s sewer system is the most reliable means of sewage disposal.

Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s Project Clear is the initiative to improve water quality and alleviate many wastewater concerns in the St. Louis region. It will invest billions of dollars over a generation in planning, designing, and building community rainscaping projects, system improvements, and an extensive program of maintenance and repair. One of the initiatives for MSD Project Clear includes $100 million in rainscaping investments. Rainscaping is any combination of plantings, water features, catch basins, permeable pavement, and more that manage stormwater as close as possible to where it falls, rather than moving it someplace else. Below ground level, improved soils store and filter storm water, allowing the surrounding area to slowly absorb it over time. Above ground level, native plants, basins, and water features create public green spaces that also help store water. Used effectively, rainscaping can reclaim storm water naturally, reduce sewer overflows, and minimize basement backups. The purpose of the Rainscaping Program is to reduce the volume of storm water in our combined sewer system by installing landscaping that helps capture rain where it falls, instead of allowing water to run off-site. Rainscaping can also be employed to solve a drainage problem, increase aesthetic appeal, improve property values, and attract birds and butterflies, in addition to other benefits.

St. Louis Sewer Overflow

St. Louis Sewer Overflow

Posted By on Jul 21, 2015

Residents of St. Louis, we have had a time of it with an unfortunate sewer back up!  In addition, heavy rains made for an even messier clean up and worsened conditions of homes inundated by water and sewage waste due to a flash flood.  Many homes also have damage to their basements. Due to the likeliness of mold build up, it’s recommended to dispose of items that are water logged as mold can be hazardous to your health.  The City is expected to pay up to $8,000 per home for cleanup provisions.  After a state of emergency was declared, roads were closed as old bridges were estimated to be unsafe due to high water.

Flooding is an unfortunate by product that an over worked sewer system and continual rain can cause.  Perma-liner can help!  We have a top of the line rehabilitation and repair system that can save you the worry of ‘what if’.  We have state of the art trenchless technologies that also keep your landscaping intact.  Give us a call or go online to www.perma-liner.com to find out how we can help you keep the underground infrastructure at your home functioning its best.

Construction has begun in St. Louis on an impressive collaboration. The City is underway with an extensive repair and rehabilitation project.  It is a 9.2 million dollar underground infrastructure restoration plan.  The renovation of pipelines is taking place in the downtown district combined sewer.  This is an area with over 5,000 linear feet of aging pipeline built in the 1800’s. The Metropolitan Sewer District is heading up the funding and has also decided to focus most of the repairs on the Old Mill Creek section of the sewer, which is the most in need of relining.  All told, the project encompasses several tasks including the high and wide arch shaped sewer, 15 manholes and over 50 lateral connections.   Several hundred tons of reinforced steel will be utilized.  St. Louis residents, this is a work in progress and your patience is greatly appreciated.  The City has its best workers on the job, along with a well-designed strategy in place to have this undertaking completed by late 2017.
